Dear Guerrilla History listeners,
A few bits of news, and relevant materials from the show to help contextualize ongoing events. Links available in text, so be sure to check them out!
Georgia
As always, this Friday brought a new Guerrilla History episode, and this one is a utilization of a detailed historical discussion to understand current events. The topic is Post-Soviet Georgian History, and includes discussion of the ongoing protests across the country. For this episode, we bring on Georgian labor union leader and writer Sopo Japaridze to take us through this history and discuss the factors and actors in the curerent events. Definitely an episode worth listening to in order to better understand what is going on!
South Korea
As we briefly discussed in our last newsletter, a LOT has been going on in the Korean Peninsula recently. Since that previous newsletter, President Yoon of South Korea has now been arrested for his role in attempting to foment a coup through a declaration of martial law. If you missed it, we recently had an episode Korea Dispatch - Martial Law, Impeachment, and More w/ Ju-Hyun Park of Nodutdol, which includes many of these events in the discussion, but was recorded prior to Yoon’s arrest. We also had Ju-Hyun on a few months ago for another discussion that may be useful to you - A History of American Imperialism in Korea - US Out of Korea. Between these two resources, you will likely understand the onfolding situation much better than you otherwise would!
Kenya
Our friend and comrade Booker Omole, of the Communist Party-Marxist Kenya, recently was the target of an assassination attempt in Kenya. This comes shortly after his arrest by the Kenyan state and ongoing repressive efforts by the state against him and the Party (which we have an interview with him on). Our relationship with Booker goes back almost three years, and we have had several other terrific conversations with him through the years which also may shed light on why the state is attempting so fervently to repress him and the Party. Building the Communist Party of Kenya and History and Class Analysis of Kenyan Elections Dispatch are two worth seeking out.
And More
Adnan and Henry always have more things in the works. A few written pieces are coming out soon, in the form of forewords/introductions to books, but recently we a new blogpost for the Review of African Political Economy (ROAPE) blog, which is allows us to finally officially announce that our series on African Revolutions and Decolonization will begin to drop this upcoming Friday, with an introductory episode featuring Momodou Taal. Get ready! We are extremely excited for this series, which is set to run every other week (interspersed between our usual non-series episodes) for over the next year and a half. Be sure to subscribe to Guerrilla History on your podcast app of choice, and recommend comrades to do so as well! You DEFINITELY won’t want to miss the series!
Lastly, we just want to remind you that we are completely independent and never run advertisements, which means that the only way that we can continue creating these episodes and paying our platform fees is through voluntary contributions from listeners, like you, on our patreon.
